Smashing Photographer Mike Davis at Egg Nog Jog

Mike Davis is a smashing photographer who does almost anything to take great photographs, but on Sunday he went too far. He had been asked to photograph the annual Egg Nog Jog at Terra Cotta Conservation Area, and he was set to catch the runners leaving the start line. Either they were faster than he expected, or he was not quick enough to get out of the way, because he was clipped by some passing runners and smashed to the ground.

He called me that afternoon. “Guess where I am.” “I don’t know, at home?” “No.” There was silence. Then I knew. “In the hospital?” He had a dislocated shoulder, drove to Emergency and was treated by doctors who made sure no bones were broken, then fixed his shoulder. He was told to wear a sling for four weeks.

One of the race organizers got back to him with “You’re a great photographer Mike, but there are limits to getting the shot!”

At least he’s not photographing horse races or auto races. Not yet.

  • Sounds rather like horses than runners.

  • Ow! I am sure that hurts. I wish Mike a full and speedy recovery. I am sure he will be careful and wear the sling for the entire four weeks. He will have to choose between eating and drinking at all the upcoming parties, poor man. Should he be less than diligent regarding the sling, I suppose that can be understood at this time of year. Besides, they now know Mike on sight at Emerge, don’t they?

  • Always the intrepid photo-seeker. Fork food is definitely in order… call Bill for his pot pies!

  • I admire you devotion to the “craft”. I hope you are not planning to go to Iraq. Might be a bit rougher down there…

  • Oh no! Mike is just too dedicated! Hope he heals soon. Happy holidays to you both,
    Donna

  • Extra! Extra!
Mike being run over by runners is run in this week’s newspaper. He is definitely a celebrity. Though injured, can he give autographs?

  • I didn’t see it happen but there is more to the story…after the fall, Mike picked up his camera (with the one good arm he still had left) and slowly headed to take more pictures of the kids running the 1 mile smile. Talk about being a trooper! He must have taken tons of pictures and then he headed to the finish line to take more pictures of the runners coming in. Mike, you are truely amazing…and a little bit crazy!
I hope you have a speedy recovery and that Santa is good to you this year!

  • Thanks for all your comments. We never expected there would be such interest in his accident, but the local paper caught a lucky shot of what happened. For a couple of days, it will be available at http://www.independentfreepress.com until the next edition gets posted.
And what Barbara is referring to when she posted that they recognize Mike at Emerge, is a previous incident when he was chopping wood and axed his ankle. That went swiftly around the Emergency department & staff wanted to see him.
How come he can do difficult caving without accident?

  • Please pass on best wishes for a speedy recovery to Mike. I guess the photographer that got the photo of Mike on the ground took the easy way out…

  • They may have to rename the race to the Egg Nog Trample! Glad to know it’s “only” a dislocated shoulder. Hope Mike mends quickly!

  • Mike,

I’m sorry you were pummelled, trampled and injured during the Egg Nog Jog. Your bravery in the pursuit of photographic excellence is admirable. However, may I suggest next time you actually register for the race – either that or spike your egg nog!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery! Ouch!

    Cheers,
    Deborah
